Shepherds

During weekdays, I worked as a full time staff in one of the largest pharmaceutical company. Normally, I would go on with my normal routine to take calls or either check emails for any incident issues within the company’s premise. One time, me and my other colleagues notice that our supervisor is not around. Without any supervisor in the production floor, we encountered an issue that needs additional supervisory assistance. We rattled around and keep asking with each other on what we are going to do. Luckily, one of our colleague took charge of us.He supervised us on the things we need to do. Also, he encourages us that we can do the necessary things to accomplish the task. We worked as a team until our supervisor arrives.

In our Christian walk, we couldn’t just walk in our own way all alone. We need people to gain trust and at the same time being disciple in helping to get deeper in our relationship with God. Just like in the Bible, when Jesus saw the crowd, He had compassion on them.

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. – Matthew 9:36

Jesus is the best example as a Shepherd. Since we are being taken care of by the King of kings and the Lord of lords, we are provided this privilege and character who tends, herds, feeds, or guards His people. Here are some observations I’ve browse through the Bible being as a good and faithful shepherd.

I. A shepherd puts his flock first- Ezekiel 34:1-10

Shepherd

  •  a person with a shepherd’s heart cares for his team with an authenticity and sincerity, not just about himself. It is the weakling and not the strong that neglects their people.
  •  a person with a shepherd’s heart leads people with wisdom not force.

II. A good shepherd sees the bigger picture – Psalm 23

Shepherds

  •  a person with a shepherd’s heart knows the real needs and meets them.
  •  a person with shepherd’s heart provides spiritual guidance and modeling.
  •  a person with a shepherd’s heart gives comfort and confidence- a combination of gentle grace and tough love.
  •  a person with shepherd’s heart empowers generously.
    – trusts them with responsibility
    – trains them for competence
    – unleashes them with authority
    – communicates for clarity and quality
    – builds them up through loving support
  •  a person with shepherd’s heart provides vision, hope and love.

III. A good shepherd leads from the heart, not with a fist. 1 Peter 5: 2-5

  •  a person with a shepherd’s heart serves with a joyful and willing spirit- does not resent the time spent.
  •  a person with a shepherd’s heart serves with pure motives, not for glory or glamor but for the glory of God.
  •  a person with a shepherd’s heart serves without abusing power and authority- a servant, not lording it over them.
